The Railroad Store

If you find yourself on traveling on Hwy 72 through Paint Rock in Jackson County, stop and say high to Roy Whitaker at the Railroad Store.

PAINT ROCK, Alabama – In the valley between the Cumberland and Keel mountains, among the sounds of frogs croaking by the Paint Rock River, is the only sign of a retail business in Paint Rock.

It is known as The Railroad Store. There are no trains in the store, but there is a good reason for the name.

As the 10:50 a.m. locomotive passes, thundering just behind the east end of the store, Roy Whitaker pauses for his almost hourly interruption.

12 Retirement-Friendly Retreats – Retirement & Relocation – Blue Ridge Living

One of the spots I keep meaning to visit as we make our semi-annual run for the mountains…

Mentone, Ala. High atop Lookout Mountain, this charming community in DeKalb County is the ideal starting point for exploring nearby mountains, canyons and caves. And Mentone sits just eight miles from DeSoto State Park and Little River Canyon National Preserve. In town, residents are proud of the numerous antique and craft stores, as well as the Rhododendron Festival and Colorfest, both annual events.

Monte Sano State Park

Monte Sano, Spanish for “Mountain of Health,” rises more than 1,600 feet above sea level. The mountain has attracted visitors since the mid 1820’s with the establishment of the town of Viduta, a derivative of the Spanish word “Vida,” meaning life.  Viduta was home to a sanatorium and a hotel resort, Hotel Monte Sano, which opened its doors in 1887 and closed in the early 1900s due to a declining economy.
